Betty Jean Shumate Duncan age 75 was born August 17, 1942 and passed away at her home surrounded by her children on July 26, 2018.  She was the daughter of the late William Isaac and Mattie Marie Shumate of Middlesboro, KY. 

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother (Nana).  Betty was a member of the New Tazewell United Methodist Church.  She worked in finance and retired from the Claiborne County Hospital. 

The family expresses gratitude to her close friends and the healthcare community who have helped her in her short battle through liver failure.

She was preceded in death by her:

Husband Claiborne County Mayor:  Joe Tyler Duncan

Brothers:  William R. Shumate and Homer C. Shumate both of Middlesboro, KY

She is survived by her Children:

Judith Beth (Jody) Beason of New Tazewell, TN

William (Bill) Tyler Duncan and wife Beth of Tazewell, TN

Jayme Suzanne Phillips and husband Patrick of Oak Ridge, TN

Grandchildren:  Joseph Duncan, Isaac Duncan, Matthew Duncan, Elizabeth Beason, Austin Beason, Grace Phillips, James Phillips and Lily Phillips.

Sister:  Mildred Shumate of Middlesboro, KY

Brother:  James Shumate and wife Ann of Middlesboro, KY

She is also survived by a host of other family and friends.

The family will receive friends Sunday July 29, 2018 from 2PM till 4PM with funeral services to follow at 4PM in the Claiborne-Overholt Funeral Home Chapel with her son the Rev. Bill Duncan officiating.  Music will be provided by Alan Cooper.

Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.
