Herbert Eugene Moore age 92, of New Tazewell, TN, formerly of Dryden, VA, went Home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 27, 2017. He was a member and part time song leader of Gibson Station Missionary Baptist Church. He was born February 23, 1925 in Bristol, VA to the late Alvin and Berta Moore. In addition to his parents, two brothers, Fred Moore and Charles Moore; two sisters Ardis DeArmond and Ruby Curtis preceded him in death.
He graduated from Blountville High School in 1942. Eugene was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who always put God and family first. He enjoyed woodworking, mowing his lawn, serving his church, and spending time with his wife, family, and numerous friends.
He loved to be around people and had such a generous heart. He built hundreds of furniture items for friends and family his entire adult life, most of which were gifts. Eugene never met a stranger and loved to tease people he met along the way. His generous heart and loving spirit touched the lives of countless people throughout his 92 years and will be profoundly missed.
Eugene loved serving his church and led singing for over 65 years at various churches. He sang in several trios and quartets. He was saved at an early age and shared his love for Christ with his family and friends. He was ordained as a church deacon in 1961. Eugene raised his family to attend church on Sundays and rose every morning at 4AM to read and study his Bible. He was a strong Christian and lived his life accordingly.
Eugene married the love of his life, Fern Parsons of Dryden, VA, on February 27, 1946. They lived in Bristol, TN for 10 years before moving to Dryden, VA. In 2000 they moved to New Tazewell, TN. He served on the Pennington Gap, VA Volunteer Fire Department for over 10 years. Eugene retired after 21 years as a miner at Westmoreland Coal Company.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 71 years, Fern Moore of New Tazewell, TN. sons Eddie Moore and wife Sandra of New Tazewell, TN, Jerry Moore and wife Melody of Johnson City, TN; Daughters, Janice Foxx and husband Kenneth of New Tazewell, TN, and Linda Lewis and husband Larry of Jonesville, VA; Six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and numerous other relatives and frinds.
The family will have 2 visitations and services to celebrate Eugene's life. The first services will be Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at Claiborne-Overholt Funeral Home in New Tazewell, TN receiving friends from 5PM until 7PM with funeral services to follow at 7PM with the Rev. Ronnie Pressnell and the Rev. Anthony Mountain officiating. On Wednesday, August 30, 2017 the family will receive friends at Mullins-Sturgill Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, VA from 5PM until 7PM with funeral services to follow at 7PM with the Rev. Preston Smith and the Rev. K.K. (Bud) Culbertson officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11AM Thursday, August 31, 2017 at Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, VA.
