Julia Alma Dean Douglas Raines, born March 19, 1922, passed peacefully from this life May 12, 2012. She loved and was loved by all who were blessed to know her. She was a faithful Christian and charter member of Powell Valley Church of God. Alma made her home at Laurel Manor Health Care where she ministered her love and faith to residents, nurses, CNAs, housekeeping, food preparation, staff and everyone who crossed her path. She was gifted to know how to bloom where she was planted. Alma was giving hugs and kisses just days before her passing. She will be greatly missed by us all. Preceding her in death was her loving husband of 61 years, Edsel Raines, who is now reunited with ?Buddy?. Also preceding were infant son: parents, Rev. George and Paralee Douglas; Three brothers, Edward, Gene and Don Douglas; one sister, Becky Moses; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Joe and Elsie Raines; sister-in-law Betty Douglas, and brothers-in-law, Teet Raines, Leeman West, Jack Diehl and Robert Moses. She is survived by daughter Patsy Lay and husband Dennis of New Tazewell, granddaughter Shannon Johnson and husband Gary of Tazewell, grandson Scott Lay and wife Becky of Middlesboro, Kentucky, great granddaughters Sydney Lay and Sophia Johnson, sisters Wanda West of Speedwell, and Mary Diehl of Texas, brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Troy and Helen Raines of Toledo, Ohio, and Arlene Raines of Maybee, Michigan; and special niece Vatanda McNew and a host of other relatives and friends. Special thanks to home caregiver Tammy Buttery, roommate Ruby Pauline Stanifer, and to all the doctors and health care workers at Laurel Manor who cared about her wellness, comfort and happiness. The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 15, 2012 from 6:00pm until 9:00pm at Claiborne-Overholt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00am Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at the Powell Valley Church of God in Speedwell, TN with Rev. Billy Paul officiating. Music will be provided by the church choir and Diane Lay. Burial will follow in the Yoakum Cemetery.
