Claiborne - Overholt Funeral Home 1106 Hwy. 33 South New Tazewell, TN 37825 (423) 626 - 2191 Fax (423) 626 - 8440 LEO WALKER YOAKUM, age 98 of Tazewell, Tennessee, was born on July 23, 1915. Leo passed away peacefully on June 5, 2014. Leo was born and raised in the Little Sycamore Community in Claiborne County, Tennessee. She graduated from Claiborne County High School and went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude from Carson-Newman College in 1937. In 1938 Leo married L. Glenn Yoakum of Tazewell, Tennessee. They were married for 53 years and had three daughters, Eleanor Elaine Yoakum, Glenna Rose Yoakum Adams and Martha Jane Yoakum. Leo had a devout commitment to her church and community, and she had a passion for education. She was a devoted member of the Tazewell Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for over forty years. Leo served as the director of the Community Action Agency from 1969 until 1977 and contributed countless volunteer hours wherever her time was needed. Leo began her service to education as an English teacher at Powell Valley High School. After teaching five years, she served as the Superintendent of Schools for Claiborne County in 1943 and 1944. She served on the Board of Trustees at Carson-Newman College and was named the Outstanding Alumna of 1998. Leo served two terms on the Claiborne County School Board beginning in 1990. Many will remember Leo for bringing poetry to the students across Claiborne County through her dramatic recitations of classical poems in the classrooms. Her poems, hymns and deep faith in God brought her comfort and joy throughout her life, and she loved sharing all three with those around her. Leo is preceded in death by her father and mother, Henry Lewis and Martha Jane (Mattie) Walker, sister, Eva Walker Jennings, husband, L. Glenn Yoakum, and her daughter Glenna Rose Yoakum Adams. She is survived by her children, Eleanor Yoakum (William A. Dunavant) of Tazewell, Tennessee and Martha Jane Yoakum of Knoxville, Tennessee; her grandchildren, Stephanie Barger Conner (Lewis Forrest Conner) of Nashville, Tennessee, Robert Glenn Barger (Kelly Weaver Barger) of Knoxville, Tennessee, Oliver Dawson Adams (Lauren Kinney Adams) of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Eleanor Johnson Marshall of Knoxville, Tennessee; her great grandchildren, Walker Conner, Elizabeth Conner, Virginia Conner, Mayson Barger, Ella Jane Barger, Cameron Marshall and Ford Adams; and other special family and friends, including her nephew Thomas Walker Jennings (Phyllis Slusher Jennings) of Columbia, Tennessee and cousins Faye and J.P. Barnard of Little Sycamore, Tennessee. The family wishes to thank Fay Garrett and those special caregivers for their extraordinary love, care and comfort. Also a very special thank you to Dr. Carroll Rose for his great care of Leo for many years. The family will receive friends Monday, June 9th from 5:00 until 8:00 pm at the Claiborne-Overholt Funeral home in New Tazewell. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 10:00 am in the Claiborne-Overholt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eddie Overholt officiating.
